Hippocampus and fornix (English)
Hippocampus and fornix (English)
A transverse section of the left temporal and occipital lobe has been made in order to reveal the hippocampal formation and fornix. In addition, the left part of the diencephalon has been removed as well as the rest of the cerebral hemispheres. In this view, the hippocampal formation and the fornix are visible in their entirety. The hippocampal formation is a prominent C-shaped structure bulging in the floor of the temporal horn of the lateral ventricle. It is widest at its anterior extent where it bends toward the medial aspect of the brain. The fornix is situated on both sides of the medial aspects of the cerebral hemispheres and extends from the hippocampus to the mammillary bodies of the hypothalamus. The fornix is comprised of several parts: columns (anteriorly), a body (midline portion suspended from the corpus callosum by the septum pellucidum) and crura (posterior portion).
